The Premier Proficiency Test for Traditional Chinese
The Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) is a standardized language proficiency test developed by Taiwan's Steering Committee for the Test Of Proficiency-Huayu (SC-TOP). It is the primary test used for evaluating Chinese proficiency in Taiwan and is often required for university admission and scholarships there.
| Test Focus | Character Set | Format | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening & Reading | Traditional Chinese Characters (Primarily) | Computer-based | Taiwan University Admission, MOE Scholarships, Workplace Requirement |
The TOCFL is divided into three bands, which further break down into six levels (equivalent to CEFR A1 to C2).
Beginner to Elementary. Focused on basic needs and simple conversations. Corresponds to foundational stages of our Zhong Wen curriculum.
Intermediate. Able to handle common social situations, read general articles, and hold daily conversations easily.
Advanced to Fluency. Ability to read literature, discuss abstract concepts, and communicate complex ideas professionally.
Unlike the HSK, the TOCFL primarily tests Traditional Chinese Characters. If your goal is to study in Taiwan, or read historical texts, our specialized TOCFL prep classes offer targeted practice in the traditional script.
